Bloody Zombie Shoesies! |
When Elvia Oliverria, genius SPFX MU Artist, asked me to be her Zombie Dorothy in the Downtown LA Zombie Makeup Fashion show and Creature Exhibit this October, I said "Sure! I 'll make the Ruby Slippers!" And it turned out to be way easy. I did high heels in red to fit the Dorothy theme, but am itching to try this on sneakers and boots with multiple colors of glitter!
I want ALL of my shoes to be glitter shoes! And you can do it too! Here is a simple step by step tutorial of how to make your own glitter shoes.
Materials:
- shoes (Any shoes that fit! I found old ones in my closet, but would have gone to Goodwill if I hadn't find any)
- ModPodge (at least 2-3 of small bottles, or one big bottle. Dollar Store sells little bottles for $1 each, or Michaels sells bigger bottles for ~$5)
- Brush (cheaper the better because the ModPodge will ruin them. I used sponge brushes and liked them, but bet bristle brushes would work just as well. Dollar store: 3 for $1)
- Glitter (An 8oz one at Michaels cost about $6.)
- CLEAR / SEE -THRU Spray Paint (Transparent enamel is best, costs about $7 at Home Depot)
- Tray or box (to work & make a mess in- i used an old fireworks box)
- ***Optional Materials: Paint (same color as glitter- either latex or acrylic- don't knock yourself out with expensive paint, it won't matter once it is sealed in with the spray paint), i painted the bottom of my shoes the same color as the glitter, just to make the shoes look like a complete art project and not have any of the original shoe visible)
** get an extra brush if you are going to paint. One brush for ModPodge, One for Paint. - ***Optional Materials: Siamese Cat (All cats are good helpers, but Siamese make the best art assistants)

Steps:
Read through first before you begin, otherwise you might miss the part about QUICKLY adding glitter IMMEDIATELY after modpodging, and letting everything DRY for a LONG time between steps.
- Put shoes in work tray
- If you are going to paint your shoes, paint them first. All over, soles too, even interiors if you are feeling gangster.
- LET DRY. should be dry to the touch before you begin next step. Drying time will be the majority of the time you spend on this project.
- Paint exterior of shoes (NOT soles or Interiors!) with MODPODGE. Do both shoes at the same time, and one side at a time (left, right, top, ect, whichever) to make the process go faster. (You can of course do one shoe at a time if you prefer, who cares really right? None of this matters.)
- IMMEDIATELY dump glitter alllllll over the modpodged area. Just Dump it. Cover them suckers. You can scoop/funnel the excess glitter back into bottle after the next step, so don't worry about wasting all that glitter- you will still have a 3/4th full bottle by the end of this, if you're careful.
- Let dry to the touch. Yes, glitter might come off on your finger, but as long as ModPodge is DRY, we can proceed to next step.
- Turn over Shoes and do the other sides, repeating steps 4-6.
- Look at them. Are they glittery enough? No? Steps 4-7 again!
It is ok to put Modpodge over glitter & then put more glitter on top, the glitter will look all evened out once all patches are filled with glitter. - Glittery enough now? Should be after 2 -3 coats of modpodge-then-glitter. Move shoes outside to clean, dry, well ventilated area. Let dry to the touch.
- Spray paint those suckers! Cover all exposed glitter with the clear enamel spray paint to keep the glitter in place for years to come. Let Dry to the touch.
- One more layer of enamel spray paint, just for good measure. Let Dry to the touch.
- GET TO DANCING MO FO!!!! EVERYONE LOVES YOUR NEW SHOES!!!
